Understanding Mixed Numbers
A mixed number combines a whole number and a fraction, like
\large 2\frac{3}{4}Mixed numbers come up all the time when working with fractions. Before multiplying or dividing, you will usually want to convert mixed numbers into improper fractions.
How to Change a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction

- Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
- Add the numerator.
- Place the answer over the original denominator.
Example: Convert a Mixed Number
Convert
\large 3\frac{2}{5}to an improper fraction.
Step 1: Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
\large 3\times5=15
Step 2: Add the numerator.
\large 15+2=17
Step 3: Write the answer over the original denominator.
\large 3\frac{2}{5}=\frac{17}{5}
Another Example
Convert
\large 4\frac{1}{3}to an improper fraction.
\large 4\times3=12
\large 12+1=13
\large 4\frac{1}{3}=\frac{13}{3}
